THE VIZIER, Scheherazade’s father, has been trying literally for years to convince the Sultan to abandon his ridiculous campaign against womankind and return to governance. At the same time, he has been keeping his daughters out of his sovereign’s rapacious eye: but one fateful evening, Scheherazade emerges and seems hellbent on arousing the Sultan’s ire. The Vizier is stuck with the unenviable task of reigning in his daughter’s suicidal obstreperousness.
“For ev’ry Subject
You offer up a Theme: When I would speak
To you of debtors unrepentant, you
Repine the fortunes wasted on a Wife
Who durst to dote upon her Jew’lry more
Than on th’ Jewel of her Master’s Potency,
As though she ought to hang upon the Scepter
Alike to Moses’ staff. A Sultan’s staff
Is sturdy true and ready for his Office,
Yet ‘tis not Evidence of God, whate’er
We fane would have our Ladies testify.
Thus speak you of Taxes, learned Sultan.”
